First hunting club here was organised back in 1937 when a club named "Sunja" was founded. The club changed its name to "Posavina" hunting club in 1946. In 1997, the Club was named by its present name. The two hundred members look after 10 352 hectares of hunting grounds. Hunters come across the following game in the grounds: doe, hare, wild boar, pheasant, marten as well as minor feathered game such as quail, woodcock and wild hens. A significant number of objects has been built on the hunting grounds (cleared and cut through spots, feeding stations where game can consume food and salt, observation points and two houses). Hunting tourism is gradually and slowly unfolding, bringing in more and more foreign hunters.

The Homeland War plays a special role in recent Sunja's history. Between 1991 and 1995, Sunja became a symbol of freedom, dignity and heroism. The trails and tribulations in Sunja commenced on July 27, 1991 and finalised in August 1995. There were 71 who parished, 8 missing, 150 wounded defenders, 13 civilian victims. Sunja was partly destroyed in the War. The area around the train station was the hardest hit. Total war damages inflicted on housing amount to over sixty seven and a half million kunas, while commercial buildings suffered damages estimated to over twenty-two and a half million kunas. The Sunja frontline played a tremendous role in the Homeland War by defending the rest of unoccupied Croatia. Many veterans's association sprung up after the War was over. HVIDRA, invalid veterans' association, founded in 1996, has 122 members while the other one, UHDDR, volunteer veterans, founded in 1996, has 753 members.
