During the school year 1991-92, 140 pupils and
their teachers resided in Gusce and Kratecko because of the proximity of the
demarcation line between the Croatian land and occupied territories (approx. 500
meters). Pupils and teachers used to cross the river Sava by a ferryboat each
day until 1994-95. They returned to teaching and learning in a dilapitated
building-450 pupils all together, many of them settlers (refugees) from Bosnia
and Herzegovina. There are 20 classes, 423 pupils and 43 teachers in the school.
Back in history of Sunja, a school is first
mentioned in 1802, having 30 pupils. The school was closed down in the face of
restructuring and reopened in 1827. Girls' school was functioning from 1872 till
1889 when it merged with a boys' school. From 1912 till 1927, there was a crafts
and trade school here where about 400 students graduated.
School building was been repaired as needs granted.
An earthquake in 1967 brought on significant
damage to the school building so it had to give way to a new one. Unluckily,
after the pupils and employees moved into a new building, the roof started to
leak. The school suffered 18 straight hits during the Homeland War, further
aggrevating the situation.
An extensive renovation kicked off in June 2003,
much to pupils' and teachers' content.
